Jack
Native SonJack is a member of Bigger Thomas’s poolroom circle and a potential participant in Bigger’s proposed robbery of Blum's Delicatessen. His brief appearances establish him less through personal history than through a clear choice: amid the group’s hesitation, he says he will join Bigger, then reappears in an ordinary stretch of time spent walking together.
The Poolroom and the Proposed Robbery
Jack arrives at the poolroom with G.H. and walks to its rear, where he asks what the others are doing. Bigger has described a plan in which he, Jack, and G.H. would go into Blum's Delicatessen while another person kept watch at the door. The proposal places Jack among the intended participants, but the conversation also exposes the group’s reluctance to target a white shopkeeper.
Assent Amid Hesitation
As the discussion stalls, Jack lights a cigarette while Gus looks away. Bigger challenges the group’s hesitation by arguing that they would be more eager if the shopkeeper were Black. Jack answers, “I ain’t scared,” and adds, “I’m with you.” His response is a direct show of solidarity with Bigger at the point when the plan’s racial stakes become explicit. The evidence establishes Jack’s willingness to take part in the proposal, not that he carries it out.
Companionship Beyond the Plan
Jack’s later appearance shifts from the tense poolroom discussion to a leisurely walk with Bigger. After Jack says, “See you later,” they walk along the street in the morning sunshine, waiting at corners for cars to pass and smoking freshly lit cigarettes. Bigger says he would like to see a movie, and the Regal Theater is mentioned as showing a returning picture. Jack’s brief presence in this scene places him within Bigger’s everyday social world as well as the group involved in the robbery discussion.
